Position Summary:
  • The Athletic Trainer must have knowledge of a large range of medical problems.  They must possess assessment and evaluation skills and be able to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to be able to treat and care for a wide variety of needs of student athletes.
  • Athletic Trainer must possess the ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • The Athletic Trainer should be thorough and detail oriented when injury tracking and in documenting the injuries and prescribed therapies/follow up care.
  • The Athletic Trainer has the ability to communicate effectively in high stress/pressure situations when talking to patients, coaches, game officials, medical professionals, staff and families.
  • Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks with little or no supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include:
 
  • Onsite care and management of injuries and illnesses including: prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation.
  • Assess risk of injury, perform ergonomic evaluation and coaching, self-care implementation and overall wellness promotion.
  • Establish and maintain electronic documentation of all patient encounters.
  • Coordinate and implement injury prevention programs and customized preventative strategies and programs for each patient.
  • Minimize risk of injury through awareness, education and prevention strategies that may include developing pre-habilitation and strength training programs for each team in coordination with head coaches.
  • Communicate with physicians and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes.
  • Carry out medical care for assigned student-athletes per the sports medicine standard operating procedures.
  • Responsible for administrative and other duties for the athletic training room as assigned by the Athletic Director.
  • Maintains inventory of necessary health care items.  Recommends to the Athletic Director the purchase of replacement inventory as necessary.
  • Provides support for youth and prospect camps.
  • Supports the mission and strategic priorities of the program, division and TSCC.
  • The position will include frequent evening, nights and weekends.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
  • Works effectively with students and staff with an acceptable level of civility and discourse.
  • Works as an ambassador of the College and the College Athletic Department and promotes the vision and mission of the College.
  • Supports the mission and strategic priorities of the program, division, and College. 
  • Actively participates in events sponsored by the campus for the community as requested by the Athletic Director.

Program Area Responsibilities (as applicable):
 
  • Athletic Trainer is responsible for approximately 150-200 student athletes. 
  • Coverage of team practices and competitive events is a must.
  • Travel to home competitive sites and some travel to away events with teams as needed.

Education and/or Work Experience:
 
  • Licensing must be current in the state of Ohio.
  • Previous athletic training experience preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to effectively communicate one-on-one and in small and large group situations.
  • Ability to develop and complete projects and tasks without continued direct supervision.
  • Ability to provide CPR and AED training for College staff.
  • Proficient in word-processing and presentation software, internet, and e-mail.
  • Effective verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Proven record of integrity and leadership.
  • A commitment to the academic success and graduation of student athletes.
  • Knowledge of state and national Athletic Training certification changes/requirements. Sharing changes/updates with the Athletic Director.
  • Willingness to advance the goals of the Athletics Department.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations (as applicable):
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass and maintain a background check.
  • Maintains certification for CPR, AED use, general first aid, blood borne pathogen cautions and sexual harassment.
Compensation/Contract:
  • Competitive salary (commensurate with experience) and benefits.
  • 10-month contract. 

Work Environment:
 
  • Terra State Community College is a member institution of the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference and NJCAA.  The Athletic Department is made up of 10 athletic teams that compete at the Division II and III levels in Region XII.  TSCC has a long tradition of preparing students for advancement onto four-year degrees or strong placement into the workforce in a variety of skilled trades, health care, law enforcement, early education and business settings.
